Austin sought aid from WPA

Since researching the Austin Acres development which benefitted from federal aid in the 1930s, I discovered many other Austin landmarks with roots in the Works Progress Administration. East Side Lake received some WPA funds in 1937.

From the Mower Count News, Feb. 11, 1937:

“The city council has requested the WPA aid in grading, landscaping and beautifying the artificial lake area on the East Side. Specifications were made for this project by the City Engineer and the WPA Engineer that the $69,875 cost would be $60,797 and the city of Austin and the state highway department as sponsors would contribute $9,078. This work will go under way by the hands of WPA officials in an early date.”

The saga of East Side Lake started in 1910. Inspired by a newspaper article claiming that a lake was worth a million dollars to a city, local leader Jacob Herzog lead efforts to create East Side Lake. More on that next week.
