Harold L. Gomer, 100

Harold Gomer, age 100, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in Orange, California on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, where he had resided since 2016. Harold was born October 20, 1923, to Hugo and Ethel Gomer. When Harold was only 7 years old, his father passed away. His mother Ethel later met and married Lawrence Todd and together they raised 5 children. Harold attended Austin High School. He was a member of the Golden Gloves organization. In 1942, Harold joined the Navy and proudly served his country for 4 years. On April 27, 1946, Harold married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life Shirley Greenlee and together raised 4 children, Pamela, Patricia, Mark, and Cheri. The family has many great memories including the many great road trips they would take each summer. He was employed with Hormel for 40 years. Harold was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church and was active member of the American Legion. He served multiple terms as commander and was an active member of the Funeral Escort. Together he and Shirley, along with their longtime, lifetime friends, cooked and served many dinners to their fellow Legion members. Harold and Shirley loved to dance and would glide along the dance floor, never missing a step. After Harold retired, he and Shirley traveled the country visiting children and grandchildren throughout the states. They also enjoyed time in Las Vegas and enjoyed the bus trips to casinos in the area. Harold was very handy and loved woodworking, gardening, and spending time with his many friends at “The Club.” Many fond memories of Harold include the aroma of his pipe, his yummy garden tomatoes, and his great sense of humor. He remained sharp and witty until the end of his long, happy life. Many family members were able to join him in California to celebrate his 100th birthday in October.

Survivors include his daughters, Pamela, Patricia, and Cheri; grandchildren; great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Harold was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley (they were one month shy of their 70th anniversary); parents; siblings; son, Mark; grandson, Robert; granddaughter, Paige; sons-in-law, Mark Swanson and David Crawley; and many loving relatives.

Harold will be truly missed by those who were lucky enough to know him. Harold loved his God, his family, and his country.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. The visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Austin, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to various Veterans organizations.
