The Austin girls hockey team is starting to find a way to keep possession, but it still has a lot of growing to do as it lost to Red Wing 7-1 in Riverside Arena Thursday.
The Wingers (3-9-1 overall) held a 3-0 advantage after one period and they went on to lead 7-0, but the Packers did put up 12 shots in the first period and 13 shots in second period.
The Packers (1-11 overall) finally found the back of the net when Kate Fox broke free and scored on a breakaway late in the game.
“We’ve been communicating and talking to each other and that’s helped,” Fox, who has now scored two goals this season, said. “My confidence is growing and I’ve been getting a lot of breakways. It’s exciting to score.”
After scoring six total goals in its first nine games, the Packers have posted six goals in their last three games.
Austin put up a total of 20 shots on goal against the Wingers and Chloe Schaal had 35 saves.
“They’ve come a long way,” Austin head coach Sultanna Akkerman said. “We’re making good passes and we’ve just got to get more shots on goal.”
Although they are only at the halfway mark, the Packers have three home games remaining on the schedule as eight of their last 11 will be played away.
Austin will resume play when it takes on Rochester Mayo in Rochester at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
“We have practice every day during the holiday break and we’re going to try to make it fun for the girls, but they do realize that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done,” Akkerman said. “We’re telling the girls to get as much rest as they can during the break, because January is going to be our busiest month.”
