A shorthanded Southland/Grand Meadow boys' golf squad ended play tied for the second straight match Tuesday, but ended up losing this time by four strokes to Chatfield.

With two starters out, S/GM still shot gamely, with Gary Kiefer's 40 tying him with Chatfield's Erik Bakken for the low round on the afternoon. Nick Schriever's 46 from the fifth slot proved to be the difference after the first four golfers ended play all square at 173.

Chatfield improves to 2-0 and 1-0 in conference play, while S/GM drops to 1-1 and 0-1.

The S/GM girls' team faced a superior foe in 2002 state qualifier Caledonia/Spring Grove with predictable results, dropping a 241-187 decision Tuesday.

All four C/SG golfers shot a 49 or better, with Jacquelyn Hauser's 44 earning her medalist honors. Charlotte Retterath had a 53 to lead S/GM.

"We expected a tough match today, but coming off a one-stroke loss Saturday, we're improving each match," said S/GM head coach Wayne Robertson, whose girls' team drops to 2-2 and 1-2 in conference action.

Both teams will be in action today at Hayfield.
