Herbert C. Merten, 85

Herbert Clarence Merten, 85, of Taopi, Minnesota, passed away Monday, May 27, 2024 surrounded by his family at Cottagewood Senior Communities in Rochester, Minnesota.

Herbert was born on November 28, 1938 in rural Meyer, Iowa the son of Math and Adeline (Landherr) Merten. He attended Meyer School and graduated from Adams High School in the Class of 1957. He served in the U.S. Army in the 16th Engineer Battalion at Fort Hood, Texas. Upon returning from the Army, he purchased land with his brother, Eugene, creating the Merten Brothers Farms.

Herbert loved to go dancing which led him to meet his future wife, Charlene, at The Terp Ballroom in Austin, Minnesota. On May 18, 1968 he married Charlene Clausen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, Iowa. They lived in the Taopi and Adams area and farmed together until his retirement. He was a devoted father of 2 children, Carol and John. Herbert was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Adams, Minnesota and the Adams American Legion.

Throughout the years, Herb enjoyed taking trips with family and friends, sharing his sense of humor with everyone around him and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; sister, Darlene; brothers, Eugene and Duane; two infant sisters; brother-in-law and sister-in-law.

Herbert is survived by his children, Carol (Allan) Lee of Austin and John (Tracy) Merten of Austin; five grandchildren, Emily (Jordan Harland), Rayanna, Ethyn, Zakk and Maverick; four great grandchildren, Romeo, Charlotte, Salem and Layne; many nieces and nephews; sisters, MaryAnn (Delphin) Mueller, Elaine (Ron) Schemmel, and Eileen (Erv) Berg; and sister-in-law, Joyce Merten.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams with Father James Berning officiating. Visitation will be at the Adams Funeral Home on Monday, June 3, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and will continue on Tuesday at the church for one hour prior to the Mass. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military rites by the Adams American Legion Post #146.
