Thumbs up for solar projects. National Grid Renewables’ event this week highlighting its two southeastern Minnesota projects is a breath of fresh air for a number of reasons. First, it highlighted more renewable, clean energy coming on to the grid later this year, but it also shows the benefits of strong partnerships with other businesses and landowners. It was a prime example of making sure there is fairness and a common goal for all parties involved.

Thumbs up to all postseason competitors. It was another successful season for several area athletes who competed in state competitions. Maybe some of the finishes weren’t what athletes were hoping for but the very fact they made it to this level is enough of an indicator of success.

Thumbs up for EMT training. Mayo Ambulance is providing an innovative approach to training EMTs and getting more into field that are desperately needed. By paying to train and then offering the opportunity for full time jobs creates a pathway for those who want meaningful employment in a meaningful way. Yet at the same time, it also casts a light on the continuing struggles with finding EMTs, both in city and rural settings. It’s an issue with no easy answers, which makes programs like Mayo Ambulance’s novel and notable.

Thumbs up for more training. Southeastern Minnesota’s Workforce Development, with a satellite office in Austin, recently was one of nine organizations receiving a piece of $2.7 million in grant funding to help train those in underrepresented communities, creating another pipeline for meaningful employment in Minnesota.
