The Austin Greyhounds battled down the wire with the North Saint Paul Snowmen as they came up short by a score of 4-2 in Marcusen Park Friday.
The Hounds pulled to within 3-2 when Jordan Hart led off the sixth inning with a solo homer, but they left the bases loaded in the seventh after Hart was hit by a pitch with two outs and Mark Harber grounded out to end the threat.
Hart, who once played for Minnesota State University in Mankato, relished the chance of going against the Snowmen, who featured a younger roster full of college players.
“It’s fun. They’re tough guys, they throw it around and they play defense,” Hounds said. “It’s cool to see that because it reminds me of the days when I used to play in college. Sometimes you get a little tear in the eye, but you get through it.”
The Snowmen featured three players who have direct Austin connections in Boston Weidner, Jack Weidner and the son of former Hound Tim Kaplan, who used to play with Hounds manager Joe Ciola.
“It was awesome to have them down here. Those three all had their dads play for the Hounds here at Marcusen Park and it was great for them to experience it and everything it brings,” Ciola said. “Even though we lost the game tonight, I believe we really won. We gained a great experience, we cleaned things up and it’ll really help us for the playoffs.”
