It was a lovely summer day when the Brownsdale Study Club met at the home of Barb Swanson on July 16.
President Shelly Vogel called the meeting to order with the reading of the Collect.
Five members responded to the roll call, “Your favorite childhood toy.”
The secretary and treasurer’s reports were read and approved.
Under old business, members were reminded to research a topic from 1924. Mary Kidwiler Moritz recommended that if we plan on bringing guests to the tea party on Sept. 21 that we reserve the spots with Diane.
Under new business, the date for our fall outing to Winona was set for Friday, Oct. 25. Therese Manggaard will plan the itinerary.
Therese made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Mary.
Mary shared some interesting news from July 1924:
Full time air mail service began in the U.S.
The Democratic convention got underway.
Summer Olympics opened in Paris.
A tall, hairy apeman who came to be known as “Big Foot” was spotted in the Pacific Northwest.
Therese presented the main topic, “The Olympics.” The Olympic Games were primarily a part of a religious festival in honor of Zeus, the father of the Greek gods and goddesses. Believed to be first held in the year 776 BC, a foot race 600-feet long was won by Koroibos from Elis. The first modern Olympics were held in 1896 in Athens and continued every four years except during 1916, 1940 and 1944. Winter games have been held since 1924. Solid gold medals were last given for first place events in 1912. The current gold medals consist of silver gilt with six grams of fine gold. A silver medal is awarded for second place and a bronze medal for third. Diplomas are awarded for fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth places. The motto of the Olympics is “Citius, altos, forties,” Latin for “Faster, higher, stronger.”
Barb served delectable assorted cheesecake and sent everyone home with a homemade table runner.
