S/GM golfers sweep Stewartville

Southland/Grand Meadow's golf match against Stewartville Friday afternoon was about as even as you could get, with both teams tied at 172 after nine holes. S/GM won the tiebreaker to return home from Maple Valley with the victory.

"It's nice to get a win in our first meet of the year," said head coach Wayne Robertson, "even though it was close."

While Stewartville boasted the day's medalist in Ben Oulman, who shot a 2-under-par 38, the S/GM squad put in a more consistent effort top to bottom, paced by Bryan Peck's 40.

With the top four golfers deadlocked at the end of play, it went to the fifth golfers on either team to decide it. Since both A.J. Wiste and Lee Kulow put up a 46 for the fourth score, that clinched it for S/GM.

In girls' action, S/GM's Kathy Schneider captured top scoring honors with a 52, beating out Breanna Boyum's 54 from a Stewartville group that was unable to field a full team.

Both teams meet Chatfield at home in their next meet, with the girls playing on Monday and the boys on Tuesday at Cedar River Country Club in Adams.
