Anyone of a certain age is familiar with the classic Bruce Springsteen tune “Glory Days” and I”m here to tell you the song was not completely true.
While most of us leave whatever sports resume we had built up in high school far behind us as we move on to the real world, it doesn’t mean we should give up on competing.
As we get older, there are certainly less opportunities to compete in the sport of our choosing, but it is far from impossible. There are plenty of opportunities through Austin Park and Recreation and beyond to play baseball, softball, volleyball, or even hockey.
I’m not aware of any city basketball leagues, but a pick-up game is always just a few phone calls away if you have any friends who’d like to play. Or better yet, maybe you want to be the one to get a league started!
If running or cycling is your thing, there are plenty of 5Ks and road races across the area that can fill your desire to chase the field. Or maybe you’d just like a relaxing afternoon on the golf or disc golf course?
Either way, if you miss your days as an athlete, or just want to find a fun way to stay active, there should be nothing stopping you from getting involved.
Sure, you’ll never get to do a press conference in front of TV cameras and eager reporters after locking down a grueling win in pickle ball, but you may hold your head a little higher as you get up for work the next morning.
You may even find yourself humming the song “Glory Days” as a smile finds its way to your face.
