The Austin volleyball team knew that it would have some things to learn this season and the Packers are still finding their footing after they lost to Stewartville (4-0 overall) by scores of 25-14, 25-12, 25-13 in Austin’s home opener in Packer Gym Thursday.
Austin (0-2 overall) wasn’t able to sustain a lead in any game as the Tigers used a solid hitting lineup to control the pace throughout.
“We definitely did better than we did on Tuesday night and that was our goal,” Austin head coach Nichelle Guillaume said. “Stewartville had hitters and we did a really good job of adjusting our defense and reading where they were going and moving our defense around. Our passers were awesome at communicating in that sense.”
While they were on their heels in the back row for much of the night, the Packers showed resiliency in the final game when trailing 9-3. Lexi Brede hustled down a ball into the back row and was able to get it to Isabelle Bolster, who put it down for an impressive point.
Austin sophomore Quinn Osgood, who had 10 kills and 13 digs, said she hopes that hustle becomes contagious.
“I really like our new coach and we’re trying out some new things,” Osgood said. “I really enjoy that. I think we had a really good game, even though we still have a lot to improve on. We’re always going to be trying our best.”
Guillaume said that she is still working on figuring out Austin’s best lineup as she continues to get accustomed to her team.
“I think they’re still getting to know me as a coach and I’m getting to know them as players,” she said. “I don’t think we’ve found our perfect rotation yet.”
Austin stats: Quinn Osgood, 13 digs, 10 kills; Lexi Brede, 12 digs; Elizabeth Clennon, 10 set assists; Haleigh Holman, 6 set assists
