The Austin Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the return of its Day on the Farm event, on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
This annual tradition offers a one-of-a-kind educational experience for third-grade students from Austin, Pacelli, and Lyle schools, providing many with their very first encounter with life on a farm.
Throughout the day, students will visit three local agricultural hubs: Jeff Sayles Hog Farm, the Sayles Dairy Farm, and the Mower County Fairgrounds. They will explore the world of agriculture and discover how much effort goes into food production, from animal husbandry to crop cultivation. For many of these students, it’s a rare opportunity to step outside the classroom and gain hands-on knowledge about farming and the environment.
“Not all classrooms have four walls, and this event is a perfect example of that,” said Joe Bower, President of the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce. “Day on the Farm is more than just a field trip; it’s a chance for kids to connect with our local food producers, understand where their food comes from, and develop a deeper appreciation for the hard work that goes into farming. It’s heartwarming to see the joy and curiosity on their faces as they learn about this vital industry.”
Day on the Farm is an important event for the community, highlighting the essential role of agriculture in our region and fostering a sense of responsibility and respect for the land among our younger generation. Through hands-on activities and personal interactions with farmers, students gain a better understanding of healthy, fresh, and local food and how it ties into our environment.
