Two people have been killed following a two-vehicle crash late Tuesday morning on Highway 218.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the head-on crash occurred at around 10:48 a.m. Tuesday morning at 140th Street between Austin and Lyle.

While details of the victims won’t be released until Wednesday morning, the State Patrol’s report indicated that the crash involved an unbelted/unrestrained occupant.

One of the victims was a 17-year-old male from Austin who was southbound on 218, while the second was a 25-year-old female from Rockwell, Iowa driving northbound.

The crash closed Highway 218 for a time and has since reopened.

The Mower County Sheriff’s Office, Lyle Fire and Ambulance, Austin Fire Department, Mayo Ambulance and the Minnesota Department of Transportation responded.
