As a member of the Austin Page Turners, I am reminded of the incredible importance of the Austin Public Library in fostering a love for reading and building community connections. Established in 2001 by then-mayor Bonnie Rietz, the Austin Page Turners program invites residents to read a selected book by a Minnesota author, sparking enriching discussions and shared experiences. Alongside Bonnie, a dedicated committee of community volunteers brings the Page Turners program to life, creating a welcoming space for all.

The library is at the heart of this initiative. We serve as a welcoming space where people of all ages can access books, participate in events, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Our library not only provides the chosen book but also hosts writer’s workshops and author visits, bringing the community together in celebration of literature.

Why is this important? Reading a single book as a community helps break down barriers and encourages empathy. It allows us to explore diverse perspectives, fostering understanding and connection among residents. The enthusiasm generated by this program demonstrates the community’s commitment to literacy and lifelong learning.

The collaborative efforts between the Austin Public Library, local schools, and businesses mark the library’s vital role in promoting educational and community building relationships. These partnerships enhance access to free resources and encourage a culture of reading that enhances our community.

As we turn the pages together, we not only enjoy great stories but also weave a tighter social fabric — one that values connection, inclusivity, and growth. Join us this year as we celebrate 23 years of the Austin Page Turners and experience the power of a shared book. If you’re interested in volunteering, reading, or participating in our upcoming events, we’d love to have you!
