Harbans Singh, 94, of Kingwood, TX, (formerly of Austin, MN) passed away on October 10, 2024.
Harbans was born in Jalalpur, British India (now Pakistan) c. January 1, 1930, the fifth of eight children to Dr. Karam Singh, a major in the British Army, and Viran Devi. He married Bhupinder Kaur Batra of Campbellpore (now Attock, Pakistan) in Meerut, India in 1957. He came to the United States in 1958 to pursue his Ph.D. in dairy cattle nutrition and received his diploma from the University of Minnesota on December 19, 1964. He accepted research positions in Minnesota and New Zealand and spent 25 years with the United States Department of Agriculture in Kansas and North Carolina. He spoke seven languages fluently (Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Balochi, Farsi, English, Spanish) and loved to travel, most recently visiting his favorite city, Dehradun, India, at the age of 92. He spent most of his retirement in Alabama, where his granddaughters were born, and loved his great-grandchildren whom he called “the little guys.”
Harbans will be remembered dearly by all who loved him. He was predeceased by his parents; and six siblings, Satwant, Narinder, Kulwant, Joginder, Kuldeep, and Kuldip. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bhupinder; a brother, Tarlochan, of Virginia; a brother-in-law, Hanwant, of India; a sister-in-law, Swaran, of India; three children, Neena Davis (Glenn) of Alabama, Davinder Singh (Robin) of Georgia, and Saveena Singh of Connecticut; grandchildren Lisa Wheel (Gavin), Lindy Roper (Ryan), Brittney Davis (Edgar), Tess Reser (Mac), Bradley Singh, Jeremy Singh, and Aaron Winchell; great-grandchildren Hudson, Colton, Eric, and Francesca; and many nieces and nephews who reside in four different continents.
Additional information regarding his scattering of ashes will be provided by the family at a later date.
