On Friday, the Brownsdale Volunteer Fire Department's will host its all-you-can-eat fish fry. This is the first time that the Brownsdale Fire Department has held a fish fry in the spring.
They are known for their annual fall fish fries and the volunteer crew decided to try a Lenten season fish fry.
The Brownsdale Fire Department really knows how to put on a fish fry. They have their own fryers and they have had great turnouts for their fall fish fries and hope to have the same for this one. In the past, they have served around 400 hungry guests.
The Fish Fry starts at 4 p.m. Friday and runs until 8 p.m. The menu includes potato, cole slaw, beans, dinner roll, coffee or milk. Adults are $7.50 and children ages 12 and under are $5.50. For those who are shut in or want to eat at home, take outs are available. Phone (507) 567-2616 to place an order for a take out meal or for any other information regarding the fish fry. The money raised from the fish fry goes to the fire department.
The new fire chief for the Brownsdale Fire Department is Curt Unverzagt. He is originally from Dexter but has lived in Brownsdale for more than 20 years. Unverzagt replaced Phil Hatten as the fire chief.
"I was the assistant fire chief before. I just started in January. I'm learning. Phil Hatten is helping me," Unverzagt said.
A man of few words, Unverzagt works at the North Country Co-op as a laborer. He got involved with the volunteer fire department when one of the local farmers asked if he would like to be part of the crew. The Brownsdale Fire Department is not a city-owned fire department, but is self contained and owns itself.
The fire department has several fund-raisers each year and the dedicated crew of 20 firemen do not have to be prodded to help in their events.
"We have no trouble getting help from the men. We will be having the fish fry at the fire hall. There is plenty of room for parking. We just ordered a new sign for the fire hall. It was made by Nystrum Signs. We haven't gotten it up yet. It will look real nice," Unverzagt said.
