The man convicted in the drunk driving crash that injured Austin teen Wyatt Hamlin, and who later fled before he could be officially sentenced has been arrested in Tennessee.
Jeffer Lorenzo, 24, has been arrested in Cleveland, Tennessee and is currently being held in the Bradley County, Tennessee jail. According to the jail roster, he’s facing possible domestic assault and prohibited weapons charges. He was booked on Dec. 15 after being arrested by the Cleveland Police Department at around 7 a.m.
Mower County placed a hold on Lorenzo, however, there is no further indication yet as to when Lorenzo might be back in Minnesota.
A warrant for his arrest was issued on June 13, 2024 in Mower County after he failed to show for a hearing at the Mower County Court House.
Lorenzo had previously agreed to a plea deal in April where he pleaded guilty to felony criminal vehicular operation causing great bodily harm while under the influence of alcohol.
According to the plea agreement, the remaining charges, which included a charge of felony criminal vehicular operation leaving the scene of an accident, could be dismissed.
In court documents, it was determined that Lorenzo was behind the wheel of the vehicle that collided with the SUV driven by Hamlin on July 28, 2023.
Hamlin suffered severe injuries in the crash, which resulted in a lengthy hospital stay as a result of the crash.
Lorenzo was discovered lying on the ground next to a house near the scene of the crash. At the hospital, Lorenzo had stated that he was traveling around 50 mph at the time of the crash. A preliminary test indicated a .20 blood alcohol content.
