Richard G. List, 94, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Monday, January 27, 2025 at St. Mark’s Living.
Richard was born in Austin, Minnesota to James and Anne (Hokanson) List on November 20, 1930. He graduated from Austin High School in 1948. He served in the US Army from 1953-1957.
On January 22nd, 1951, he was united in marriage to Joan Marie Hatfield. Together they moved to Oakland, California in 1953. After returning to Austin in 1957, he worked for Mobil Oil and Hormel Foods. He ran the Mobil Distributing plant with his father who retired later and Richard then ran the business.
In 1970 he went into business for himself after purchasing his first school bus company. Over the years, he acquired two more school bus companies and a motor coach company. In 1994 he retired and remained living in Austin. In 2011, his wife Joan of 60 years passed away.
He spent his life enjoying fishing, hunting and making Elderberry Jelly and gathering Black Walnuts. For many years, he took his children and grandchildren to Lake Nungesser in Canada for an annual fishing trip which always concluded with a shore lunch prepared by the lodge. He looked forward to this all year, spending time with his family was always a priority. He was very popular with his children’s neighborhood friends as he would teach and play baseball, football and kickball at the local school playground. They would frequently knock on the door and ask if Mr. List could come out to play and most of the time he did! He was a devoted husband, father and friend to many.
Richard and Joan were parents to six children, Linda, Elizabeth, Lori, David, Richard, and Kerri.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joan; brother, James List; son-in-law, Mark Crumb; and grandson, Tony Crumb.
Richard is survived by his children: Linda (Randy) Schroeder, Elizabeth Crumb, Lori (James) Nelson, David (Janie) List, Richard (Amy) List and Kerri (Kyle) Klaehn; 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
