HAYFIELD – The Hayfield/Schaeffer girls basketball team closed out its final home season game with an explosive performance as it used an early run to beat Randolph (7-12 overall) 82-48 in Hayfield Monday.

Maggie Hansen hit two early three-pointers to kick-start the Vikings, who opened the game on a 19-2 run.

Shooting with confidence is a big thing and when we start fast we play really well,” Hansen said. “We’ve come a long way (as a first year co-op team). We’re all really good friends now. We’ve had fun and although we lost a couple of games that we probably shouldn’t have lost, we keep pushing each other in practice with positive  attitudes .”

HSA junior Lily Morrisey dominated the paint for the Vikings (12-9 overall) as she put up 22 points, 19 rebounds and three steals in limited playing time. Morrisey and the Vikings embraced playing in front of a huge crowd as the game was part of a girls/boys doubleheader and Hayfield also had many of its youth basketball players participating in the festivities as well.

“I think tonight was super fun and the big crowd makes us play better and faster,” said Morrisey. “Now we want to finish strong on the road and hopefully get four wins.”

Betsy Gillette finished with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists for Hayfield.
