Caledonia's Kevan Meiners, fresh off a state wrestling championship, showed Southland that he plays baseball too.

Meiners picked up the pitching victory in relief of his brother Kasey and also delivered the offense with a two-run homer in both teams' season-opener Tuesday night. The Warriors won 9-2 in Southland's Three Rivers Conference debut.

Zach Stratton suffered the loss for the Rebels, who play at home Thursday against LeRoy-Ostrander/Grand Meadow. Stratton went four innings before giving way to Greg Retterath, who closed out the game from the mound.

Southland's six errors sealed the loss as the Meiners brothers combined to give up only three hits. Caledonia rattled off eight hits and committed just one error in the field.

Ted Hanson had two singles and two RBIs for Caledonia, and Jeremy Bauer added another two-run homer. Adam Stenzel had two singles and an RBI as well.

Chad Wilson led Southland's offensive attack with an RBI-single in the fourth inning.

"They outplayed us," said Southland coach Larry Luke. "We left too many men on base in the first five innings. We just couldn't seem to get a clutch hit tonight when we needed it really bad."
