Southland stops L/P

Southland was one point away from putting five players in double-digits in a 58-37 non-conference girls' basketball victory over Lyle/Pacelli Tuesday night in Adams.

The Rebels turned up their man-to-man defense and kept Lyle/Pacelli at bay for most of the game. Both teams moved their records to 3-12.

"We've had trouble with our man-to-man offense, we've kind of struggled and tonight they really exploited it," said L/P coach Craig Smith. "They were putting their best defender on Louise (Mudra) the whole time."

Mudra finished with five points and had difficulty creating scoring opportunities for her teammates because Southland would not let her get at the basket. Anna Hebrink led L/P with 10 points in their second straight loss.

Amanda Landherr led the host Rebels with 15 points. Carrie Shawback chipped in 12 while Amy Walerak and Nikki Kirkpatrick added 10 apiece. Danielle VanOosbree was one point away from scoring double-digits, finishing with nine. Bridget Felten netted a field goal for two points.

The game lacked the intensity it held last year as one of two Southeast Conference clashes. Southland's move into the Three Rivers Conference did not slow the Rebels down any in this Section 1 matchup.

Southland (3-12, 1-10) plays Thursday at Lewiston-Altura in a TRC contest. Lyle/Pacelli (3-12, 3-5) returns to SEC play Thursday in Lyle against rival Glenville-Emmons.
