The Hayfield boys' basketball team got its fifth win in as many games Friday night when they defeated Hiawatha Valley League foe Triton, 69-50, at Hayfield.
Down 15-10 in the first quarter, Hayfield went on a 22-0 terror that eclipsed the quarter break and gave the Viknigs a 32-10 advantage that Triton could not make up. Hayfield got four of their seven three-point baskets in the first quarter and went 9-15 in the first eight minutes.
Four Vikings scored in double digits during the game. David Johnson led the scoring effort with 22 points -- nine off three-pointers -- and eight rebounds. Drew Wanzek netted 13 points, Shawn Colucy sank baskets for 12 points and Bryan Oelkers had 10 points and six boards.
Other players scoring for Hayfield included Andrew Abboud, Anthony Reese, Andrew Fitzgerald and Weston Hanson.
"They jumped out ahead of us in the first quarter," said Hayfield coach Chirs Pack. "But we started full-court pressing them and had a lot of easy baskets off rebounds."
Hayfield improves its overall record to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in HVL play. The Vikings will continue conference competetion on Tuesday when they host league-leading Byron at home. The Bears are ranked third in the state in Class AA.
