The Austin All-Stars Knights of Columbus 13 and under baseball team placed third this past weekend at the annual Rochester Klampe Memorial Tournament held at the Rochester Baseball Complex.
Competing in the 13AAA division, the team compiled a record of 4-1.
Austin began play Friday evening against Burnsville and in a tight battle, came away with a 6-4 victory. Daniel Bollingberg, Jason Stoulil, Josiah Rohne and Matt Neumann collected two hits apiece and Nathan Conner knocked in two runs to lead the offensive attack.
Bollingberg pitched the first four innings to pick up the victory with Jake Reinartz going the last three innings of the game. Reinartz worked his way out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases with noone out. Holding a slim 6-4 lead, the Austin hurler retired the next three batters on a strikeout, fly-out, and a ground-out to record the save.
Continuing in pool play on Saturday, the All-Stars faced Champlin Park. Pounding out 15 hits, the Knights of Columbus team won, 12-4.
Conner had three hits and scored four times with Stoulil, Reinartz, Dylan Gasner, and Brandon Bickell each collecting two hits. Bickell knocked in four runs, Rohne two runs, and Alex Ciola, Conner, Stoulil, Reinartz, and Bauer a run apiece.
Bickell was also the winning pitcher going four innings with Conner finishing up the last three innings. Gasner handled the catching chores.
In the final pool game, Austin was paired against the team they bested in the Mankato tournament finals, the Sioux Falls Titans. The team got excellent pitching from Bollingberg and Reinartz who combined to shutout the powerful team from South Dakota, 7-0. The pair gave up a total of two hits over the seven innings in a game played through steady rain.
Reinartz led the offensive attack going 2-for-3 at the plate with a big, bases loaded double, scoring all three runners in the four-run third inning. Bickell was also 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Rohne contributed by going 2-for-2 with an RBI. With the win, advanced to the championship bracket on Sunday.
Austin matched up against the East Ridge Raptors in the semifinals. East Ridge pitching proved to be too much as they held the Austin to just two runs on five hits in the 6-2 loss.
Bickell had two hits for the All-Stars while Rohne and Lee Bauer each knocked in a run. Bickell took the loss on the hill giving up five runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. Bollingberg came on in relief to finish the game. The loss put Austin into the third place game against the hometown Rochester Renegades.
Trevor Stevens and Reinartz combined for a no-hitter, propelling Austin to a 4-0 victory to claim third place. Stevens got the win hurling the first four innings and Reinartz finished up, facing the minimum nine batters in the three innings he pitched.
Gasner again was rock solid behind the plate in his catching duties. Bollingberg was 3-for-3 with a triple. Stoulil and Conner both collected two hits in three at-bats with Stoulil, Gasner, Bauer, and Neumann knocking in a run apiece.
The tournament concludes the regular season for the All-Stars. They compiled a record of 18-5 and begin state tournament play July 8-10 in the MBT State Tournament in Lakeville. The weekend of July 15-17 finds the team in the Gopher State Tournament of Champions in Burnsville.
