Southland slips past Dover-Eyota

An up-and-down game ended on the side of Southland as the Rebels ran its consecutive wins streak to three with a 50-46 Three Rivers Conference victory over visiting Dover-Eyota Monday night in Adams.

Greg Retterath led all players with 16 points -- including four three-pointers -- and his three steals helped the Rebels run to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in TRC play. Retterath's steal and layup late in the game grabbed a four-point lead for the Rebels.

Southland led by seven, 26-19 at the halftime break, but the Eagles came out with a 28-7 third-quarter advantage to take a one-point lead. Defense drove the Rebels through the final period and the team barely shot well enough from the free-throw line to hold on to the narrow lead.

"I thought we shot pretty well, and our defense was probably the key," said Southland coach Greg Storey. "We played a 2-3 zone in the last three quarters of the game and held them down from the perimeter."

Dover-Eyota hit just one of 11 three-point attempts, and Southland's eight turnovers were low against a pressuring Eagles defense.

"We only had eight turnovers and they converted probably five of them into layups," Storey said.

The Rebels held D-E's leading scorer Mike Hammel to 10 points -- 12 below his season average. Adam Wadsworth led the Eagles with 11 points and Brad Skrukrud added 10.

Tim Schneider chipped in for Southland with eight points and a team-leading 12 rebounds. Scott Gilles and Adam Nagele added seven apiece, and Steve Snyder and Dan Bakker each scored six.

The Rebels are at home again tonight against Chatfield at 7:30 p.m.
