Westminster holding free ice cream social

Though activities will be plentiful around Austin this Fourth of July, Austinites may want to stop into church — Westminster Presbyterian, that is.
Westminster, a church known for reaching out to people across the world through missions, has downscaled its efforts to reach out to Austin on the Fourth of July. Its members will offer a free ice-cream social at 802 Fourth St. SW on Westminster’s east lawn, just walking distance from Bandshell Park.
“It’s just an outreach to the community,” said Selene Schulz, Westminster member. “It’s just something nice to do.”
The social, from 2 to 4 p.m. July 4, isn’t just for church members, either; it’s for everyone. Members of Westminster’s fellowship committee, along with Pastor Andrew Lindahl, will be serving and socializing with anyone who attends the event.
“This is sort of our outreach to the local community, but it’s more of a friendship,” said Lindahl.
Though it’s not quite like Westminster’s other major efforts (such as making hats, scarves, diapers, bandages and blankets to go overseas), Lindahl said it’s just a good way to make use of the front lawn and be accommodating, as many events at the park are near Westminster.
“We’re just going to celebrate our nation’s birthday and we invite the community to celebrate with us,” Schulz said.
Among ice cream on the Fourth of July, Westminster officials will offer free day parking on July 3, and July 4, in its east parking lot.
