Mower County United Way hits goal

Amy Baskin woke up Tuesday a bit worried.
The executive director of the United Way of Mower County said she knew the organization was just short of reaching its $775,000 goal for the 2002 fund drive.
But a handful of businesses came through on the drive's last day, much to the relief and joy of Baskin and others who have tirelessly worked on another successful campaign.
"It's unbelievable," Baskin said. "We got a big push (Tuesday) morning."
United Way organizers and supporters met at midday Tuesday near the Austin A&W to fill the "thermometer" that has kept track of the fund drive since it started in September.
Baskin said it's important to receive donations from local businesses. However, individual donations are just as vital -- even from those who may have only contributed pocket change.
"It's just a combination of everyone's effort," she said. "If we didn't have every donor that we have, we wouldn't be here."
So far, $785,722 has been raised and Baskin said the group will continue to welcome donations. The money, which nearly all of it is kept locally, helps support 72 programs available through 29 partner agencies.
"The whole community pulled together to make it possible," Baskin said.
