County may renew temporary lease at mall

Public Health and Human Services are likely to remain at the mall — at least a little longer.
During Tuesday’s regular meeting at 1 p.m., the Mower County Board is expected to renew the lease for the Public Health and Human Services offices at Oak Park Mall.
The new lease does not reflect on the likelihood of a move downtown, just the timing. The lease at the mall expires in early fall, and there’s little chance the board will make a decision and move the offices before the lease is up.
The long-term future of the offices is less certain. The board will at some point discuss future options for locations. The offices can stay at Oak Park Mall, move into vacant space in the Mower County Government Center, or the county could build a new building on the “Robbins block.”
No discussions have taken place at public meetings for a few months. With 26 employees in Human Services and 13.355 employees in Public Health out of work during the state shutdown, talks don’t appear likely soon.
