Even though he is credited with leading the efforts to build East Side Lake, Jacob Herzog’s obituary from the Austin Herald does not mention the project. From June 30, 1970:

“Jacob (Jake) Herzog, 83, of 306 13th St. NE, long-time Mower County political figure, died Monday night at St. Olaf Hospital.

His political career began in 1912 and over the years the offices included city alderman to federal official and state representative. He began as third ward alderman in 1912.

After being defeated for mayor in 1919, Herzog returned as a machinist for the Milwaukee Railroad. In 1922, he was elected county commissioner and served on the board for 12 years. Herzog was named Works Progress Administration (WPA) regional manpower director in 1935 with offices in Rochester.

He continued with the WPA until the war and then was named to the War Manpower Commission with an office in St. Paul. Following the war he returned to the Milwaukee Railroad. Herzog won his first term as state representative and went on to serve throughout the 1950’s. He was active in the DFL party.

Survivors include his wife, Martha, two sons, Joseph, Owatonna, and Charles, Austin; a brother, Dr. E. C. Herzog, Brainerd, Minn., a sister, Mrs. Angela Gromme, Austin, 14 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Queen of Angels Church. Interment will be Calvary Cemetery. Rosary service will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesdays. The family prefers memorials.”
