The Austin Post 91 baseball team was happy to get one win on Tuesday, but it couldn’t help wishing it had won two games.

Austin committed four errors in a 5-4 loss in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Post 91 bats woke up in a 9-6 win in the nightcap at Dick Seltz Field.

“We should’ve had the sweep but we threw it away in the first game and we almost threw it away in the second,” said Austin outfielder Quinn Yocom, who went 5-for-7 with 3 RBIs on the day. “But we came through and got some runs for our pitcher (in the nightcap).”

Post 91 had the tying run on third in the opener with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Luke Mallory struck out to end the game.

Austin compiled 14 hits in the nightcap win and none were bigger than a two-run single that Caleb Wahlen drove up the middle to make it 7-4 in the third inning. Wahlen later scored on a single by Yocom to make it 8-4.

After struggling with errors in the first game, Austin (6-12 overall) committed four errors to allow two runs in the top of the first and Austin had another error to allow a run in the top of the second.

“That’s kind of the story of our season,” Austin head coach Bob Stratton said. “It’s the simple errors that kind of grate you a little.”

Austin recovered from the sluggish defensive start and didn’t commit an error the rest of the nightcap. Austin even turned two double plays, including one to end the game when Yocom caught a fly ball in center field and threw to second to get a runner who led off to far.

“The bats helped us (play better on defense) and Luke (Mallory) didn’t walk many guys,” Austin shortstop Joey Swatfager said.

Mallory had just one walk and so did starting pitcher Adam McMasters in the first game. Between the two, they allowed just five earned runs in 14 innings of work.

“The pitchers pitched well,” Stratton said. “Lately we’ve been telling our guys not to give away free passes because we need to force teams to hit against us and not give anything away.”

Offensively, Austin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener when Swatfager launched a two-run homer over the left field fence.

“He threw me a fast ball and left it up and I just turned on it,” Swatfager said. “It’s not like I knew it was coming.”Waseca took the lead for good in the fifth inning of the opener when McMasters struck out Kyle Waugh for what would’ve been the third out but Waugh advanced to first on a wild pitch and the next Waseca hitter reached on a throwing error. Waseca’s Jon Mitchell made Austin pay with a two-out, two-run single up the middle to make it 4-2.

Austin scored two more runs on two-out singles by Yocom and Gabe Kasak, but it wasn’t enough as Waseca scored another unearned run in the sixth.

Yocom has been hitting the ball well as of late.

“They’re getting low and outside and that’s where I like the pitches. I’ve been getting a lot of them lately,” he said. “(As a team), we’ll be all right come playoff time. We’re starting to come together as a group.”
