Teen held after alleged break-in

A 19-year-old Austin man is being held in the Mower County jail after allegedly breaking into someone’s house and thinking it was his own.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said Matthew Smith was arrested around 10:15 a.m. Sunday. According to a police report, the tenants of a house in the 1300 block of Fourth St. SE awoke to find Smith in their house.

Smith reportedly told the tenants he had been dropped off there and thought he was home. He appeared intoxicated, according to a police report.

When the residents of the house called the cops, Smith reportedly left but was found near the Viking Glass storage units a short time later.

One of the tenants said there was cash missing from his wallet, according to Krueger.

Smith is being held in jail until he is charged and appears in court.
