Albert Lea woman accused of assaulting boyfriend with a hammer, screwdriver

A 25-year-old woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend with a screwdriver earlier this week was charged Friday with second- and third-degree assault, along with a charge of misdemeanor domestic assault.

Samantha Leah Freeman, of Albert Lea, allegedly hit the man in the head with a hammer and broke his tooth before reportedly stabbing him in the chest and back with a screwdriver at a residence at 1208 St. Joseph Ave., according to a Freeborn County District Court complaint.

The incident took place after Freeman and her boyfriend had reportedly been playing pool together earlier in the evening and got into an argument. Freeman reportedly told police she didn’t want to deal with his attitude, court documents stated.

The victim, who had gone to the emergency room at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Albert Lea, at first denied that Freeman had injured him. But after hearing that she was accusing him of an injury to her hand, he then attributed his injuries to her.

Court documents state police also interviewed three separate witnesses who reportedly saw Freeman with a screwdriver. Two of the witnesses stated they saw Freeman in the backyard frantically screaming, one of who stated Freeman was also threatening with it.

The third witness said he saw Freeman with a screwdriver and had heard her arguing but didn’t know what she was saying.

Officers were unable to find the screwdriver.

Freeborn County District Court Judge Steve Schwab ordered Freeman be held in the Freeborn County jail on unconditional bail of $50,000 or conditional bail of $5,000.
