Art Center offers May workshops
The Austin Area Art Center will feature two art classes this month.
The first, a children’s class on making masks, will be held 9-11 a.m. on Saturday at Oak Park Mall. Instructor Kim Finnegan will start by showing students a variety of masks from different cultures around the world, touching on what role the masks play and from what materials they are made. After, students will craft their own masks using a variety of paper sculpting techniques.
The cost of the children’s class, which is geared for grades 3 and up, is $15 for non-members and $12 for members.
Later this month, the Art Center will offer an adult workshop on plein-air oil painting. Instructor Joni Finnegan said some experience is required for the class, and she encourages students to bring an idea of what they’d like to paint, and plans to address artistic techniques including color, value and perspective. Weather permitting, the class will take place outside.
The two-day adult workshop runs May 18 and 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an hour lunch break. The cost is $180 for non-members and $155 for members.
