Our Opinion: Worth another go

Daily Herald editorial

One of elected officials’ top responsibilities is being able to effectively communicate with and listen to their constituents. That’s why we’re glad the Austin City Council is considering giving Coffee with the Council another try.

The council voted on Monday to discuss reviving the forum — with a few changes. It could be called “Conversations with the Council,” and a council member could lead the discussion and make sure anyone who wants to speak has the opportunity. They may also suspend the meetings for 90 days before an election to prevent candidates from campaigning.

These changes seem fine, but the council should keep in mind the point of these meetings is to promote a healthy dialogue with Austin residents.

It’s hard for elected officials to get honest input from constituents, and “Conversations with the Council”is a good way to remedy that. We strongly encourage council members to approve “Conversations with the Council” at its next public meeting.
