County to get estimate on new radio system

The Mower County Board will have exact figures Tuesday on the cost to update the sheriff’s department’s radio system.

During the board’s regular 1 p.m. meeting, Sheriff Terese Amazi will update the board on the purchase and price of three dispatch units to update to the 800 MHz radio system, which the county board decided to purchase Sept. 11.

Through grants, the county has purchased about 120 radio units for law enforcement, fire, EMT officials, and rural EMT and fire officials. The newest grant will replace the main radios in dispatch and would fully commit Mower to changing to 800 MHz.

Previous estimates had the cost of the dispatch units at $175,000 each, with the county paying half.
