Matchbox show plays this weekend

Baba Yaga is back in town to bewitch local residents.

The Matchbox Children’s Theatre will present “Baba Yaga and the Black Sunflower” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 12 and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14.

“It’s been very exciting,” said director Jennie Germain. “Baba Yaga” is Germain’s first time helming a production, though she got the job through unusual circumstances. David Dahlquist was the original director but stepped aside, allowing Germain to take the lead, as she has previous experience as an assistant director.

“I’ve kind of carried over his vision,” Germain said.

The play is a coming-of-age tale that centers around a young girl asking the eponymous witch for advice. Baba Yaga stories are well known in Eastern Europe, as she is depicted as a witch who lives in a house built atop chicken legs. While she can sometimes be a villain, it is uncertain what Baba Yaga will do come opening night.

The 26-member cast have their hands full, as some portray parts of the background and animals, while others portray flying horsemen. In addition, the costumes and scenery will help the story “come to life” in Austin.

“The tale of Baba Yaga is really well known,” Germain said. “Seeing that story come to life in Austin is very exciting and offers something new.”

Tickets are $5 for youth, $7 for adults and can be purchased at the Paramount Box Office.
