HAYFIELD — The Hayfield volleyball beat Blooming Prairie in three games in the Section 1A West Division quarterfinals in Hayfield Thursday.

But it would be inaccurate to sum up the Vikings’ win as a simple sweep.

No. 4 seeded Hayfield fought off plenty of BP rallies as it prevailed by scores of 25-22, 30-28, 25-22 to move onto the semifinals, where Hayfield will take on top-seeded Faribault Bethlehem Academy Saturday at noon in Mayo Civic Center.

“We just had to stay scrappy and get our game started,” said Hayfield junior Dani Wagner, who had 11 kills. “We got through the dips and we pushed through.”

Hayfield (17-6 overall) trailed 11-10 in the first game and it trailed the second game 13-10 but it always had an answer. No. 5 seeded Awesome Blossoms (21-9 overall) had tied up the second game at 28-28, but Wagner slammed down consecutive kills to put her team up two games to zero.

“They could’ve easily given up and they fought back in that second game,” Hayfield head coach Kim Severson said. “That was a battle and I thought they were scrappy on defense.”

BP tied up the third game at 21-21 after a kill by Janelle Morem, but Wagner once again came up with two straight kills and Hayfield sophomore Jo Bungum sealed the win with a kill down the line.

Bungum, who is 5-6, finished with nine kills as she learned to pay attention where BP’s middle hitter Taylor Hagen was.

Hagen, who is 6-1, finished with four blocks.

“We just stuck on Hagen,” Bungum said. “We expected big blocking from her and we just had to stay aware to where she was.”

BP head coach Gina McLaughlin was pleased with her team’s effort, but she said it lost a bit of momentum when game two slipped away.

“We play streaky and Hayfield just had a little bit more than us. We were trying to live on defense for a long time and that’s tough to do in volleyball,” she said. “I don’t know if any of them feel like this was their best volleyball, but the kids showed guts and it was a hard fought game.”

Severson, who played high school volleyball for Stewartville and has played in Mayo Civic Center, is excited to coach a team in Mayo Civic Center Saturday.

“I love competition, so this is my element. It’ll be a fun and it’ll be a new experience for a lot of them,” she said.
