Austin police will give wayward parking jobs a respite for a month.

Due to complaints made at the City Council meeting Monday night, Austin police will temporarily suspend giving parking tickets to people who park more than 2 feet from the curb in the city. They will give warning citations until mid-November.

According to Police Chief Brian Krueger, residents are cited $10 for parking more than 24 inches from the curb, a standard law throughout the country and one included in driver’s training manuals.

“It’s been on the books for years,” Krueger said.

Parking enforcement officers use a tape measure to see how far a car’s tires are away from the curb. Krueger said any parked car with tires on a curb’s apron should be fine.

The issue came to a head last the weekend as City Council members and citizens discussed a parking ticket on Facebook.
