Our opinion: Try volunteering

Holidays like Martin Luther King Jr. Day remind us to keep volunteering in the community.

There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer in Austin, and it’s important residents get out to help others. Not only does it set a good example for the future generation, but it helps residents in the area who may need services or goods that they can’t otherwise obtain.

The Salvation Army volunteers help feed and clothe the needy in our area. Find time to volunteer at a meal.

Austin’s Community Learning Center always needs volunteers, for everything from running community education classes to tutoring adults looking to receive basic education services. A couple hours a week would mean the world for those adults.

The local Habitat for Humanity is still active; consider building a shelter for a family who needs it.

And churches across the city consistently find good volunteer projects, from packing backpacks full of supplies for students in need to building shelters and schools in other countries less fortunate than ours.

There is no shortage of opportunities to give back to the community. Austin is known for its community volunteerism and its many fundraisers for a reason: People love to give back here. Join your neighbors and find a way to give back, too.
