Dammen Nordic Cross Country Ski Race is set for Saturday

As long as there is still snow on the ground, the Dammen Nordic Cross Country Ski Race is still set to go at the Hormel Nature Center this Saturday.

The race, which includes an 8K Classical, 13K Freestyle and one-mile beginners/kids race, was turned into a run last year due to lack of snow. As of Wednesday evening, there was still enough snow on the ground to ski for this year’s race.

“Right now we’re planning to have a race,” said race coordinator Michelle Johannsen. “But it’s weather dependent because safety is an issue if it rains.”

The race, which began five years ago, has grown in popularity every time it’s been held.

“It has gotten bigger every year,” Johannsen said. “We’re hoping for a larger turnout again. We keep getting the word out and hopefully more people will come.”

Registration for the race is $18 for adults and $8 for kids 13 and younger. It is $5 extra to do both classical and freestyle races.

Last year, the race was renamed after Kevin and Kyle Dammen, the two young men who created it, after Kevin died during a kayaking accident on Lake Superior in June 2011.
