Hundreds attend Larry for Life cancer benefit

Nearly 400 people attended the Larry for Life benefit March 12 at the Austin Moose Lodge to help support Austin’s long time DJ, Larry Dixon.

Larry has been battling lung and brain cancer, said Larry’s mother, Ann. According to Ann, doctors stopped chemo and radiation treatment because they weren’t working. But Larry is still battling, Ann said, “one day at a time.”

Some of Larry’s longtime musician and DJ friends attended the event and helped put on a show.

“It was standing room only for about an hour and a half,” Larry’s sister Deb said. “It was great.”

Larry and Deb said Valerie Hanson and Jack Morgan were a huge part of putting the event together, which took both of them by surprise.

“They put together a magnificent group of volunteers,” Deb said.

Volunteers and guests served food, danced, played a bean bag tossing game, held a silent auction and more.

Larry has lived in Austin his entire life and has always been into radio. He went to school in Austin for radio and is a part-time DJ at KAUS radio. The event, which raised several thousand dollars, will help Larry continue to fight his cancer.
