Bark for their bite: Dog park site gets OK

There’s no playing dead anymore for local dog park enthusiasts.

Austin City Council members approved the proposed dog park location Monday night on a vote of 6-1 with council member Brian McAlister voting against it.

The park will be located at the south end of the 500 block of Second Street SE. Park and Recreation Director Kim Underwood said this location has received the fewest citizen complaints out of any previously proposed location.

S.P.A.R.K. (Start a Park for Austin’s Respectable K-9s) still plans to raise about $25,000 to help cover costs of the park, including fencing.

The group will hold its first fundraiser at the dog park location from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 29. Free dog licensing will be offered for dog owners with the proper documentation. According to city officials, dog licensing normally costs $10 if the animal is spayed or neutered and $25 if it is not.

“It’s a good opportunity to educate and inform the public,” said Megan Burroughs, organizer of S.P.A.R.K. “We’ll have a canine costume contest and provide information about the dog park.”

Burroughs said any donations to the group are tax deductible.
