Art to die for

AHS hosts 20th annual event

There were lights, there was glamour, there were zombies.

The 20th Annual Austin High School Art Show didn’t drag its feet when it came to production. The assembly, under the theme “zombie circus,” showcased the best art and artists from AHS over the past school year, with one artist surviving the creative onslaught to become Artist of the Year.

“It’s such an honor,” said Ashley Arhart, senior. “It was huge. All of the artists up here were so deserving.”

Arhart won the vaunted prize because of her dedication and the overall quality of her work, according to AHS art teacher Barry Brobeck. There’s plenty of evidence for that: Arhart won several awards of excellence for her art. Her true passion lies in photography, as shown in a stop-motion photography video she presented about herself.

“Photography’s my niche,” Arhart said. The video, which showed Arhart performing various sports and activities, was shot using more than 1,000 photos of her, as well as some help from friend Jay Ettinger, who came up with the idea for stop-motion after watching a commercial using it.

Arhart prefers realism over abstract art and she plans to go to St. Cloud State University for Graphic Design.
