The Austin High School class of 1968 will be well represented at the Austin ArtWorks Festival this Aug. 25-26 at Austin’s historic downtown power plant.

Three class alums, Gretchen Ramlo, Scott Anderson, and Joel Nelson, have been doing behind the scenes work on the ArtWorks Committees.

Additionally, there is a visual artist, author, and musician from this same class: John Finch, Rod Cockrum, and Jay Kaiser. John’s current passion is exploring the techniques of repousse and chasing in metal.

Recent work reflects his interest in the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century. John will be demonstrating the fundamentals of the ancient technique of metal “chasing” and “repousse” work during the festival.

Demonstrations will be several times daily on Saturday and Sunday. Hand-outs will be available outlining the process and will include links for more information.

Rod Cockrum tries to activate readers with unique phrasing and believes that a written piece of art is more than passive representation.

He believes well written pieces have power to connect us with and stimulate our feelings and subconsciously stored experiences, images and ideologies.

Rod hopes that his book “Immediacy,” is a strong and relevant communication between the artist’s inner self and the reader’s inner self.

Jay Kaiser recently performed at the Paramount in June with the Bosso Poetry Company.

He will be presenting a full 45 minute set on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 12:30 p.m.
