Teen who allegedly lit cousin on fire arrested
A 14-year-old boy who allegedly smeared hand sanitizer on his 7-year-old cousin’s back and lit him on fire has been taken into custody.
Police Chief Brian Krueger said the boy is being held at Many Rivers Juvenile Detention Center in Rochester. He was arrested near the Mill Pond area around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Krueger previously said the 7-year-old boy’s parents brought him to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin Tuesday evening for burns to his back. The boy told his parents and hospital officials his older cousin put hand sanitizer on his back and lit it on fire.
The boy sustained first-degree and second-degree burns, according to Krueger. He was treated and released from the hospital without being admitted.
Mower County Human Services and the Austin Police Department are working with the boys’ families to get to the bottom of the matter. A report has been forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s Office for possible charges against the 14-year-old, Krueger said.
