GRAND MEADOW — Caleb Leichtnam, a Grand Meadow senior, is hoping to figure out how to play 11-man football and he’s hoping to excel as he has signed his letter-of-intent to play football at Rochester Community and Technical College next season.

Leichtnam had 2,390 all-purpose yards and 33 TDs, but he’ll be focusing on defense with the Yellowjackets, where he will play safety. Leichtnam, who is 6-1 and 185 pounds, had 16 career interceptions with the Superlarks.“I’ve got to make the transition from nine-man to 11-man, and on defense that shouldn’t be too hard,” Leichtnam said. “I’m looking to go in and play right away.”

Leichtnam had some offers from four-year schools, but he’s hoping that RCTC, which went 10-2 and won the MCAC State title last season, can give him some recognition that he didn’t get in GM.

“I had a few scholarship offers, but nothing that I was really looking for and nothing close to home,” Leichtnam said. “RCTC has a real good program and it’s close to home. They’ve got a lot of guys that transfer out to bigger schools and get a lot of money for it, that’s the goal (for me).”

Leichtnam will be joined by his teammate Scott Wilson, a 6-2, 270-pound offensive lineman in RCTC as Wilson also signed a letter-of-intent.

“I’m glad to see them both moving on. I’m glad they’re close, so I can go watch them play,” GM head football coach Gary Sloan said. “Scott’s got the frame for it, he’s a big strong kid, and I always like to see kids give (college football) a chance. If it’s not for them, fine. But I like to see them at least give it a try.”

Josh Landherr, a 6-2, 245 pound offensive lineman from Southland, and Camden Hurd, a 6-1, 240 pound tight end from Southland, also signed with RCTC.
