‘09 forgery case comes to a close

A man charged in 2009 with aggravated forgery and who later missed a court appearance was convicted of a felony Friday in Mower County Court.

Jose Alberto Diaz-Granillo, now 25, received a stayed jail sentence and three years’ unsupervised probation for the felony charge. He must cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

According to a criminal complaint, Diaz-Granillo was pulled over near 14th Avenue and Eight Street Northeast Sept. 18, 2009, for a traffic violation and arrested for not having a valid license or insurance. His vehicle was registered to a “Joshua Martinez,” who was wanted on a Nobles County, Iowa, warrant for driving after revocation.

The officer asked for identification, and Diaz-Granillo provided a Mexico consulate card with his name and photo on it. He also had a Quality Pork Processors work ID with his photo, but with the “Martinez” name.

The complaint stated that Diaz-Granillo and “Martinez” lived at the same residence in the 800 block of 10th St. NE.

When questioned, Diaz-Granillo denied being “Martinez;” he told the officer that he and Martinez were half-brothers with a different mother.
