The Hayfield volleyball team’s top two setters are still getting to know each other, but they were on the same page Thursday as they helped the Vikings sweep the Packers by scores of 25-8, 25-17, 25-8.

Hayfield senior Jessie Foster had 10 set assists and four ace serves and eighth grader Maggie Streightiff had eight set assists for the Vikings (2-0 overall).

Streightiff is learning the setter position on the fly as this his her first year on varsity.

“They’re coming along,” Hayfield head coach Jeremy Struck said of his setters. “It’s a slow progress and they’re getting used to each other. We haven’t had a left handed setter in a long time and it’s a different release.”

Foster likes what she sees in Streightiff as a teammate.

“She’s picking it up really fast. Her hits are amazing and her sets are really good,” Foster said. “We’re feeling good about where we are. We’re still learning, but we can do better.”

The Packers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in games one and two as Kelsey Sederquest opened the night with two ace serves, but they couldn’t stay in control of either game.

“We struggled tonight,” Austin head coach Cindy Owen said. “We have some work to do.”

The Vikings dominated games one and three, but Austin was within 15-13 in game two before Hayfield pulled away.

“The couple of close games we’ve had this season have been things that we’ve done,” Struck said. “It all depends on what we want to do and we have to do it better or we might be on the losing end when we play some good teams.”

Austin stats: Kelsey Sederquest, 6 points serving, 2 ace serves; Mer Gach, 2 kills, 1 ace block; Rachel Wahlert, 2 kills; Kristine Snyder, 2 kills; Shayley Vesel, 6 digs, 5 set assists
