Austin school board prepares for retreat, looks to name pool
The Austin Public Schools Board will hold its annual retreat Monday afternoon. The board plans to use the time to go over its approach to the Baldrige model, which focuses on the workings of the school and how to include best practices. It will also discuss the curriculum for the upcoming year.
Also during the meeting, the board will decide whether to approve the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school calendars and the new name of the Ellis Middle School swimming pool.
“We’ve come up with a policy so they standardize the approach with that,” said Board Member Dick Lees of naming the pool. “It’s just a matter of voting now.”
The board hopes to decide on the name as Albert “Bud” Higgins Swimming Pool so it does not have to delay the decision until the March meeting, Lees said. He and Vice Chairperson Don Fox assisted in getting the 100 signatures board policy requires to name a school building or facility. The move was delayed earlier this month because signatures had not been gathered.
