Jacob Crosby and Babaye Oja will rule over Austin this week.

Crosby and Oja are Austin High School’s Homecoming King and Queen of 2011.

“It’s just staggering,” Crosby said.

Neither Crosby nor Oja thought they were going to make it on the court, let alone become royalty.

“I actually had no idea,” Oja said.

Both reacted to their coronation as befits a high school senior: They looked stunned and hugged the other candidates. Oja didn’t even let last year’s queen, Molly Bissen, put the crown on her head all the way before she jumped, hugging the other contestants and smiled while the crowd roared.

2011 AHS Homecoming King and Queen Jacob Crosby and Babaye Oja take the Homecoming oath after being crowned Wednesday afternoon.

“I was like ‘Oh my gosh!’” she said.

Crosby and Oja will join the rest of the Homecoming Court throughout the week’s festivities, including Thursday’s Battle of the Connects and the Homecoming Parade on Friday.

Crosby participates in the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Science Olympiad, Obsidian Strings, the table tennis club and was named to the all-state orchestra this year. He hopes to attend Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., to pursue a degree in music education.

Oja participates in volleyball and basketball. She is not sure where she’s going to school, but she has submitted an application to Winona State University. She hopes to pursue nursing, as she loves to help people.
