HRC to hold MLK dinner, talk
Austin is ready to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. once more.
The Austin Human Rights Commission is sponsoring a dinner, documentary and discussion on King and modern-day civil rights at Christ Episcopal Church at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
The HRC’s annual celebration of Martin Luther King Day is open to the public and meant to encourage discussion and action on civil rights, according to HRC member Darya Gemmel.
“Civil rights don’t protect themselves,” Gemmel said. “We’re all responsible for other people’s rights.”
The event will begin with a soup and bread dinner, followed by the documentary “The Civil Rights Act: Living the Legacy,” which Gemmel said was featured at several recent human rights symposiums. After that, participants will discuss what King would work toward today and how area residents can make a difference.
